Once the coating goes, rust works from the inside of the steel skin outward, and by the time you see bubbling paint, the panel's usually thinner than it looks. The panel swap looks simple until the track underneath is bent, not just dented - a car backing into a bottom panel often tweaks the track section right behind it, and a new panel dropped into a bent track will bind or won't seal. We check the track alignment before we order anything, because ordering the wrong fix wastes your money and our trip. The other snag: insulated versus non-insulated cores. A lot of the doors going in around 1983 in this area came both ways, and a non-insulated replacement panel bolted next to an insulated one will look right and perform wrong - cold spots, condensation on the inside face in winter. We ask which core type you have before we quote, not after the panel's on the truck.

Swapping a single steel panel is within reach for someone comfortable with a socket wrench and a Saturday, provided the door is disconnected from the opener and the springs aren't under load while you work. Where people get hurt is not respecting spring tension on a door that's still attached to its opener chain - the panel comes off, the balance shifts, and the door can drop or slam. If you're set on doing it yourself, at minimum get someone to help hold the section while you unscrew hinges, and don't attempt it if the track's bent or if you're not sure whether the door is insulated.
